The Marble Falls High School boys soccer team and Fredericksburg played to a 3-3 tie March 4 in District 26-4A play.

Joaquin Aguilar had two goals, while Marco Almazan had a goal and an assist.

The Mustangs (11-5-3, 4-1-2) thought they had scored the winning goal on a corner kick, but officials waved it off, saying the ball “looped out of bounds” first. The scoreboard keeper even awarded the goal.

“I never saw anything like it before in my life,” Marble Falls head coach Ryan Craven said. “Even Fredericksburg thought it was good.”

Marble Falls scored first only to have the Billies (9-7-1, 5-1-1) tie. Fredericksburg never led but most of its goals came on free kicks. The game was tied at 2-2 at halftime. The final goal was scored with about 20 minutes left in the contest.

“They scored a goal that was 50 yards away,” the coach said. “It went over our goalie’s head.”

Meanwhile, the Mustangs took many of their own shots, eight of which might have found the back of the net against another goalie.

“We had our opportunities,” Craven said. “Their goalie is really good.”

Marble Falls is currently third in the district standings with San Antonio Davenport in first place and Fredericksburg in second place.

“The best we can do now is a three-way tie for the district championship,” Craven said. “We have to win out. We definitely put ourselves in a hole. We let our focus down on defense at times. The set pieces, for example, weren’t done with a sense of urgency. That’s out of character.”

Davenport comes to Marble Falls Friday, March 7, with the junior varsity playing at 5 p.m. and the varsity to follow.

“Our kids had a great practice (March 5),” the coach said. “They’re motivated. They know the season is not lost. We’re closer to being 12-1. We have to put it all together. We have to take care of business.”
